day 21 Monday afternoon 7 June
at Plockton
at Plockton
We drove on to Kyle and got some more food before going to Plockton. We parked the car and walked around the village, stopping at a pub for half a pint of ale and a seafood chowder for lunch.. We shared a table with a very nice couple from Sydney – seemed more like country than city folk. Then we wandered back to a picnic table to write some postcards [Sheena, Chases, DPI, Lee and Em and Roy] to find that the Post office nearby had closed at 2 pm.
Scotland has a wealth of excellent coastal villages, often offering both incredible scenery and excellent visitor attractions.
One of the most famous is Plockton, near Kyle of Lochalsh, thanks to BBC TV series Hamish Macbeth (http://plockton.com/village/hamish_macbeth.shtml ) which was filmed there in the mid 1990s. Originally known as Am Ploc, Plockton's main street is lined with palm trees and whitewashed houses, each with a seagull gazing out to sea perched on its chimney stack, and you can also see Highland cattle, flower gardens and pleasure boats. We drove around by Stromeferry back to Dornie on our way back and walked to the post office which was closed. A lady had driven up at the same time and said in a lovely highland voice that the postmistress was probably just having a cup of tea and she then emerged from a house opposite and opened up the wee building. A classic village conversation then ensued which we enjoyed and we got stamps and posted our cards. We had a nice long walk along the road past Dornie, looking across to Conchra then when we got back to the hostel we walked along a forestry track on the hill above. That was the night of the near-death snorer when I bailed out into the next dorm where one of the ladies then bailed out due to some nice regular persistent snoring. She slept on the couch in sitting room and next morning we met an irate cyclist who had bailed out of yet another female dorm where she had a barny with some Belgian women re their snoring. Dick reported no problems in his room with about 8 men!
