Inverness and Pitlochry

day 23 Wednesday 9 June
from Torridon to Inverness and Pitlochry
We left Torridon in rain after the good walking weather the previous day and headed on to Inverness through more pretty highland scenery, and a fair bit of single lane road with passing places. Between the Munroes – high mountains over 3000 feet which must be conquered by hostelling types who are not riding bikes. The husband of the Melbourne lady in my dorm had a nice looking pie the previous night which they had bought in Inverness so we went looking for one. This took us to a lovely old arcade market, which was adjacent to a big modern shopping centre where we did our usual supermarket shopping – more wine and cheese, UHT milk.
Then on to the softer green country and a faster drive down to Pitlochry, a very attractive old town with narrow streets etc. a bit like Bakewell, and a nice old house up some steep narrow streets. It was a warm reception and a welcome separate self contained room! The warden recommended a walk through a nice oak forest, with a lovely waterfall, The Black Spout, to Scotland’s smallest distillery Edradour, where we had a free tour and sample – very nice whisky, but 27 pounds a bottle! It was good to learn about highland illicit stills and that the colour and flavour of the malt whisky came from the Spanish sherry casks as well as the sort of water used.
Scotland's smallest distillery, Edradour ( http://www.edradour.co.uk ) near Pitlochry. Established 1825.
We had a room together at Pitlochry and the wardens baked fresh croissants for breakfast. One of the best hostels so far.

This rhododendron is a weed in Britain.
